Professional Health

The PHC Mission

At PHC, our mission is to facilitate the health and well-being of professionals in the healthcare field.
Health and well-being programs add a fourth aim to the traditional "Triple Aim" of better patient care, improved patient outcomes, and reduced costs in health care organizations, because an engaged, satisfied workforce is associated with improved patient outcomes, increased safety, more compassionate care, and decreased organizational costs. Our professional health programs are designed to promote a culture of health and well-being in the workplace, prevent burnout, and intervene with distress and disruptive behavior. PHC provides individuals and organizations resources, education, and training to promote work-life balance, a sense of meaning and accomplishment, support and community within and across disciplines, and a feeling of increased control and flexibility in the workplace.

Healthcare Professionals

Are you feeling emotionally exhausted or do you dread going to work? Are you feeling increasingly angry, cynical, or detached? Has your confidence in your work or your productivity decreased?

You may be experiencing burnout. Burnout and depression often go hand in hand. You are not alone. While burnout is particularly common in healthcare professions, it can occur in any vocation, and it is common. By some reports, at least 50% of people are experiencing burnout at any given time.

You do not have to face these feelings alone. Help is available.

  • Executive coaching

  • Performance coaching

  • Burnout prevention

  • Resilience and emotional self-regulation

    • mindfulness

    • acceptance and commitment

  • Communication skill development

  • Motivational interviewing skills

  • Conflict resolution skills

  • Anger management

    • perspective-taking and empathy

    • use of grounding skills

"Disruptive" Behavior

Have you been told that your workplace behavior is disruptive?

"Disruptive behavior" reflects a variety of concerns that have the potential to impact patient care. Counseling and coaching can help identify contributing factors and ameliorate problematic behaviors. Individual counseling sessions for disruptive behavior provide an integrative approach and include psychoeducation, motivational interviewing, cognitive-behavioral interventions, and interpersonal skill development.

Group and individual interventions for disruptive behavior provide social support and interpersonal skill development in a safe and supportive learning environment. Clinicians learn to recognize and express emotions that lead to problematic behavior, particularly in the workplace, and they develop strategies for preventing inappropriate behavior.

Organizations

Are members of your healthcare organization experiencing low morale? Is increased clinician turnover costing your system too much time and money?

Burnout and a sense of moral injury are increasingly common in the healthcare field, and it's a problem that affects more than simply the employee. Burnout is associated with increased costs, medical errors, patient dissatisfaction, and increased malpractice lawsuits, not to mention the fact that burnout tends to be "contagious." The team members working with a burned-out professional are far more likely to develop burnout too. Among physicians alone, burnout is estimated to cost our healthcare system $4.6 billion a year due to reduced hours, physician turnover, and expenses associated with finding and hiring a new physician. Nationally, the average cost to replace a physician who leaves your organization secondary to burnout is estimated to be $500,000.

Reducing or preventing burnout requires changes at both the individual and the organizational level. PHC develops and implements programs that address both.

  • Executive leadership training

  • Development of comprehensive clinician health and well-being programs

  • Identification of system changes that will support employees while maintaining profitability

    • meaning in work

    • community of support

    • control and flexibility

    • work-life balance

  • Rapid intervention for individuals who have been identified as being distressed or engaging in disruptive behavior
